rules

   ONE.
Please communicate with me! Feel free to talk OOC no matter what's happening. As always, IC ≠ OOC, so if Mori is offensive in any way, please don't take it personally but let me know if you are uncomfortable.
   TWO.
Sensitive subject matter is OK with me. Mori has a drug and alcohol problem and is an adult who has sex, so there's no really shying away from it. If you are uncomfortable with this, please let me know (rule one!) and I will refrain from discussing it in detail (though I try to avoid bringing it up unprompted at all). I will only write mature content with others who are 21+. That being said...
   THREE.
I reserve the right to stop writing for whatever reason I deem fit. While I'm fine with well-intentioned explorations of difficult subjects, I will not tolerate homophobia, transphobia, or racism. I understand that some characters have prejudices that causes them to clash with their environment but I can't be certain that these subjects will be treated with care in random settings with strangers!

   FOUR.
Violence is OK with me. Please feel free to attack or try to kill him (in context-appropriate settings). He's not the Warrior of Light by any means, but he spent five years in the Palace of the Dead and can hold his own! That being said, actually killing him is a no-go, for obvious reasons.
   FIVE.
No cheating! There are many things on this carrd that Mori would not immediately admit to a stranger. Please don't use your Doylist powers of omnipotence to use unspoken information against him, at least not without an OOC discussion first!
   SIX.
I'm bad at emoting. This isn't really a rule I just want you to know that I suck at finding the appropriate emote fast enough for it to feel natural in an RP setting, so I probably won't use them. I also play other races elsewhere so I don't even know which animation to anticipate with these things.

PERSONALITY.
like a shapeshifter, mori is careful to blend in with his environment...until he isn't, in which case he is made distinct by the cheerful disposition of a chatty, friendly stranger. despite his personable (or perhaps shady) front, mori is a relatively good-natured person with a low sense of morality, cursed with the unfortunate habit of solving problems with dishonest means. and though he might try to hide such a distasteful quality, mori can't quite hide his sense of desperation very well under pressure. compared to the stories of heroes, mori appears to them like a shallow comic-relief character.

NOTABLE FEATURES.   dead, dark eyes. the color of his eyes are so deep that he appears to have no discernable pupils. they are often reflective, especially at night.   various long earrings. he wears three metallic drop earrings on each ear. he calls it an aesthetic flair, but they look uncomfortable and weigh his ears down.   faint scar across his face. it's light enough that it's not immediately noticeable unless you're close up, but it's there. acquired from when he first fell into the Palace of the Dead.   smells like wax and incense.
it follows him around like a faint perfume, no matter how hard he tries to scrub it off.

A Miqo'te/Hyur wanderer from Othard. The blessed son of a Doman priest, who married a Miqo'te mudang for her spiritual powers. When Garlean colonizers began relocating his family members overseas for the war effort, he borrowed an exorbitant amount of money from various shady organizations in order to safely smuggle his remaining sisters to Eorzea. Eventually, one of these groups finally caught up to him and when he was unable to pay back what they were owed, they chased him into a Gelmorran ruin and left him to die. He re-emerged many years later from the newly-formed entrance to the Palace of the Dead. What remained of his family, who had been terrorized and torn apart for his debts, refused to accept him back, blaming him for their misfortunes. But his years spent in the labyrinthine palace were not years wasted, as he had been forced into the servitude of the necromancer Nybeth, the ruler of the Palace. While in his custody, he taught himself to mix the esoteric magic of the Cairns of Return with the compactness of the pomanders found throughout the dungeons, creating the now-known Pomander of Raising. However, this resurrection magic was only useful within the Palace itself. Outside of it, it had various ill effects and rarely worked as intended. Nevertheless, he professed himself a necromancer and wandered the land, following tragedy and ruin to trick the bereaved who would pay anything to see their loved ones again in order to earn his way back into a normal life.

His years trapped within the Palace of the Dead came with some unfortunate side effects.
he subsided on whatever he could find in the dungeons, regardless of taste or texture. as a result, he has a very dull sense of taste and extremely odd palette. while he is trying to wean himself back into regular foods, they tend to make him sick and he even turns regular food into something disgusting and near-inedible out of familiarity with the taste.
his sense of time is maladjusted and so he stays up for 36-48 hours at a time and then sleeps for 12-24 hours afterwards.
his echo manifests as a "sensitivity to the whispers of the soul", resulting in what appears to be aether-based powers of empathy. he cannot read minds, but he can sense feelings as if they were his own, and uses said echo to see/sense specters and spirits. he purposefully blocks this particular aspect of the echo using sealing magicks placed upon him by kan-e-senna and minfilia, as he gained an oversensitivity as a result of his time in the Palace.
Upon his return to society, he found that he had already been declared missing and dead, to the torment of his family. After making his first small fortune from his newfound powers of necromancy, he declared his survival and offered it as proof of ability to pay back his creditors. taking back responsibility for the debt, he became a vagabond, going by various fake names so that his misdeeds don't get traced back to his family.

NECROMANCY.His powers of resurrection operate through the use of aetherically-enchanted perfumes. With him are his custom-crafted Pomanders of Raising, which can coax a soul back into the body. These pomanders have an overwhelming candle-like scent that draw souls to it in a manner similar to aetherytes that serve as beacons for teleportation. The fraud lies in the results. Mori is fully capable of raising the dead as intended, but purposefully botches the ritual out of a desire to not actually resurrect people. While the pomander operates as intended within the Palace of the Dead, the ambient aether outside of the dungeons muddies and distorts the life aether of the deceased, especially if the death is not recent. The deceased may return to the body, but the soul may not be quite the same, resulting in a mis-mashed monstrosity that may not behave properly or remember anything. If the soul does remain relatively intact and returns to the body, there is no guarantee that the corpse itself will continue to 'live', resulting in the victim consciously decomposing. Every attempt has generally resulted in the person dying again, either by another hand or because the body gives up. Knowing this, he warns people that the restoration of life "may go wrong", absolving himself of responsibility despite knowing that it always goes wrong. To those who correctly blame him for their loved ones' suffering, he further distances himself from what he's done by guilting the bereaved for calling upon his services at all despite his warnings.

   MAGICKS.
if your character is knowledgeable in magic or sensitive to its effects, perhaps they can react to any of the following.
mori has a seal to supress some of his Echo's effects and sigils drawn on his hands so that he can lift it when he needs.  he carries with him a pomander imbued with otherworldly herbs (which he can light, making it more of round incense burner on a beaded chain). This is his instrument for resurrections.  due to the nature of his cultural upbringing around magic, he is closer classified as a black mage than a thaumaturge, as he draws aether from his surroundings. as a reaper, he does not have a voidsent avatar and therefore does not have an enshroud form, instead drawing similarly fiery blue effects through black magic.

   CULTURE.
if your character has any relation to aspects of his culture or interest in such, perhaps they would like to explore the following.
mori is from othard and may be familiar with yanxian cultures. he also has ties to garlemald, dalmasca, alexandria, etc due to his line of work and scattered family connections. he'll surely have something to say about the world!   thanks to his background as a (shinto) priest-in-training, he is knowledgeable on ceremonial rites and communicating with natural spirits (eg. the elementals).   he takes after his mother, a keeper of the moon. unlike eorzean tradition, however, he grew up with his mother and never connected with that side of his heritage.

   WORK.
if your character would like to do business with him, perhaps they would be interested in the following.
mori owes a lot of money to a lot of criminal organizations, especially that of doman or garlean origins. characters who operate in shady scenes may recognize him from other seedy locations or have heard of him as a doman priest's son who scammed them and ran away to eorzea.  he spends shadowbringers undercover in garlemald. thanks to his time here, his years hiding in the palace of the dead, and the espionage missions he did later for the ilsabard contingent, he has the makings of a pretty good spy.  he is a necromancer. if he gets the sense that your character is gullible, desperate, and deserving, he may take the opportunity to charge them large fees to supposedly resurrect their dead, should he know about their (recent) loss.

tl;dr

not a wol. msq affects him only insofar as to help him decide where to wander next.doesn't use his real name. he uses many names but in the context of RP, he is usually called 'mori'.he is in so much debt. like a cosmically absurd amount of debt. this is not made obvious though, so unless he brings it up, it should not really be discussed.a necromancer and a conman. his necromancy always results in the person coming back wrong and he knows this, but charges up the ass anyway. he doesn't make his profession immediately known, however.

nybeth's apprentice. he spent five years trapped in the Palace of the Dead and spent it as the necromancer's servant. he only managed to escape when the opening in quarrymill was first discovered.flop. he's bisexual but the scale of his problems have overshadowed his consideration for self-reflection. he tends to fall in love pretty easily though, if you want to try your luck.echo user. it operates like an aether-based iteration of dissociative empathy and allows him to sense/see spirits. it's partially sealed thanks to minfilia and kan-e-senna due to his oversensitivity to it, but he refused both when offered sanctuary by virtue of this gift.

extra

FUN FACTS.   he has twelve older sisters who have all scattered across the realm. some of them are in story-relevant situations (eg. a minor scion, a gridanian hearer, a garlean footsoldier, etc) but they are all missing, dead, or simply estranged from him.   his mother was a keeper of the moon miqo'te who was courted by his father, a hyuran priest of a doman shrine, for her spiritual powers (her Echo). though she came from a culture of matriarchal shamans called mudang, she was forced to give this up entirely and stop practicing in favor of her husband's kami-favoring religion.   the sigils on his hands were drawn so that he might access his soul-sight powers more carefully by arranging his fingers in the 'fox window' position.   his alias 'memento mori' was not chosen because of its doylist latin meaning, but because it was a phrase used to refer to him by his garlean creditors (memento being the garlean word for 'remember' and 'mori' referring to the forest that protected his family shrine).   each earring he wears represents each ~20 million he owes to one of six remaining creditors. they function as aetheric tracking devices as a part of their deal.  of the various groups he owes money to, some of them include dalmascan criminal organizations, garlean mobsters, hingashi cultists, and conservative doman political organizations.  while he secretly has a hard substance problem and a habit of frequent social drinking, he has a lower tolerance for alcohol than expected.
